TheGrint has been around for a while now, and it is used by lots of recreational golfers in the United States.
But what’s the deal with TheGrint? Does it help you keep your score? And how does it compare to other golf apps?
We dive into its features, cost, and competition to help you decide if TheGrint is ideal for you, so you have all the information you need before signing up for the pro version.
Let’s start with an overview of what TheGrint app is and how it can help you on the golf course.
What is the Grint App?
TheGrint is a golf app that recreational players widely use. It is available for download on Android and iOS and is compatible with smartphones and smartwatches. You’re able to track your USGA handicap, keep your scores, and use the in-built GPS.
Many golfers use TheGrint instead of a paper scorecard, as it’s super simple to score your round as you tee off with your buddies. Although it’s primarily a US-based app, you can use TheGrint anywhere in the world, and there are more than 40,000 mapped courses ready for use.
It’s also an excellent option for amateur competitions and tournaments, as the app features a live leaderboard feature that replicates those used on Tour. It makes for compelling golf, as you can see how you’re doing against the competition and don’t have to wait until you get to the 19th hole.
Other impressive features of TheGrint include putting, GIR%, FIR%, and iron accuracy, making it an excellent golf product for recreational players. We take a deep dive into TheGrint below and explain everything you need to know about this high-performing golf app.

How Much Does the Grint Cost (or is it Free)?
TheGrint has two pricing tiers that start at $19.99 per year. The handicap membership is priced at $19.99 annually, which you can opt for following a free sign-up. This works out at less than $2 per month to input and tracks all of your scores, which is good value compared to other golf apps.
With the handicap membership, you receive a World Golf Handicap Index that includes a GHIN number that is integrated with the USGA’s database. For this service, TheGrint is one of the best-priced golf apps on the market and is certainly worth thinking about.
On the other hand, the Pro package is priced at $39.99 per year. In addition to a handicap and GHIN number, you can also access all of the premium features that the app is renowned for.
This includes the above-mentioned features that provide you with detailed insight into your game. This awesome video introduces you to TheGrint’s premium features.
The Grint vs Golfshot – Who Wins?
With all things considered, we would say that TheGrint just about pips Golfshot in terms of value and usability. For a very reasonable $39.99 per year, you can track and monitor your golf scores at 40,000+ golf courses, which offers excellent value for money.
TheGrint is often compared to Golfshot as both apps are super popular with recreational golfers. Both boast very similar features, including scorekeeping, in-depth statistics, and handicap tracking.
But the main difference between the two is in the price and the way the membership is structured, as we illustrate in the table below:
Membership Tier | TheGrint | GolfShot |
---|---|---|
Free | Yes | Yes |
Pro | Yes - $39.99 (annually) | Yes - $49.99 (annually) |
Plus | No | Yes - $89.99 (one-time payment) |
Handicap Only | Yes - $19.99 (annually) | No |
As you can see, TheGrint is cheaper than Golfshot, and in our comparison of the pro features, we found them to be very similar. We like that you can make a one-time payment and subscribe to a more straightforward Golfshot tier, which TheGrint doesn’t offer.
Is the Grint the Best Golf App?
We would say that TheGrint is undoubtedly one of the best golf apps out there. It has thousands of positive reviews and has been downloaded widely on both iOS and Android. Golf Magazine described TheGrint as the ‘Top app for handicaps and scoring,’ which is pretty hard to argue with.
However, as you will be aware, TheGrint isn’t the only app out there, and we introduce some of its competitors and alternatives below:
Golfshot
Already introduced in the previous section, Golfshot is super similar to TheGrint and has many of the same features. But because it comes in at a slightly higher price point, we’re inclined to recommend TheGrint as the better choice. You can check out the Golfshot app here.
V1
If TheGrint is best for scoring, V1 is up there with the best if you’re looking for an instructional golf app. The premise of V1 is that you can upload videos directly to a golf coach, who provides you with real-time feedback on how to improve. You can check out the V1 app here.
GolfLogix
As producers of yardage and green books for years, the GolfLogix app is a great one for anyone hoping to fine-tune their game. Their ball tracking feature is particularly accurate and is one of the app’s most impressive features. You can check out the GolfLogix app here.
GolfNow
If you’re looking for an app that will save you money, GolfNow is just what you need. You can use their ‘Hot Deals’ section to find tee times at more than 9,000 courses in different parts of the world. You can check out the GolfNow app here.
It would be a little unfair of us to say that TheGrint is the very best golf app out there because there are so many options to choose from. However, given its awesome scoring and handicap features, TheGrint is certainly up there with the very best.
Does TheGrint Do Shot Tracking? (is it Accurate?)
Yes, you can track all of your golf shots directly from TheGrint app. In the summer of 2018, TheGrint announced a whole range of feature upgrades, and a much more accurate shot tracker was one of the most exciting revelations.
Their shot tracking feature is super simple to navigate, too. You just open your phone, select your club and target, and then head towards your ball once you have hit it. Providing you remember to set the tracker before and after your shots, you will have accurate data at the end of your round.
Given that many shot trackers out there are inaccurate, we’re really impressed by how this feature works on TheGrint. The graphics are really precise and easy-to-use, and your data is then stored on your app.
This allows you to look at your previous performance on the hole when you next take to the course.
To use the shot tracking feature, you will need to sign up for the Pro version of TheGrint app, so make sure you have paid your subscription to utilize its most impressive aspects.
Is the Grint Handicap Official?
Yes, theGrint handicap is official with the World Handicap Index, and you receive a GHIN number from the USGA. Both are important if you regularly play in club competitions and can be accessed by the competition secretary at your club.
If you don’t regularly play in competitions, it’s still worthwhile signing up for an official handicap, as it gives you a clear indication of where you stand in terms of your ability. Equally, some golf courses request a handicap certificate before permitting you to book a tee time.
Instead of paying $39.99 for the pro version of TheGrint, you can sign up for the ‘handicap only’ version, which costs just $19.99. This means you can update your scores after every round, and your handicap will be adjusted as required.
As one of the best scoring apps in the world of golf, TheGrint handicap system is excellent and shouldn’t give you any issues.
What is TheGrint Tour?
TheGrint Tour is an optional community for users of the app to sign up for, which sees you compete for the annual TheGrint Cup (which is similar to the FedEx cup in pro golf). It brings members of TheGrint together and provides you with the chance to compete with other golfers.
In 2021, eighteen cities were included in TheGrint Tour, encompassing more than 200 events. Some of the national events were played at courses like Bay Hill, Blue Monster, and PGA National, offering TheGrint members an awesome opportunity to play some of the country’s finest tracks.
TheGrint Tour is split into five flights, which means you will compete against golfers of a similar ability. The flights are essentially a handicap band and provide you with the chance to go up against recreational golfers that are at your level.
All in all, TheGrint Tour is yet another important reason why you should download the app and get involved in the community. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of participating in a nationwide tour for recreational players?!
How to Download the Grint App
You can download TheGrint on both iOS (iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch) through the Apple App store and if you have an Android device (Samsung, LG, Pixel, OnePlus, tablets) on Google Play. Currently, TheGrint app is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 on both platforms.
